Cabinet refacing is the replacement of your cabinet doors and drawer fronts in wood or laminate products. The cabinet boxes are then layered-over with a stick-on wood veneer or product to match the doors and drawers.
ADVANTAGES OF REFACING:
You may completely change the style of your doors and drawer fronts.
Some additions, structural and hardware changes may be made during process.
DISADVANTAGE OF REFINISHING: Cabinet style and layout remain unchanged.
Cabinet refinishing is removing color or stain of the cabinets and replacing with new color of your choice and clear finish. Processes such as refacing or stucture work are not refinishing. These are best classified under "cabinet making".
ADVANTAGES OF REFINISHING:
Better quality finish and major cost savings over other options. During refinishing, any surface or structural issues may be fixed. Replace hardware and adjust operations. Refinishing has lowest kitchen "down-time" over other options.
DISADVANTAGES OF REFACING:
High cost. Refacing quality may be less. Parts come from worldwide, unpredictable in grade. Long down-time of kitchen. Problem: Has been known to "peel-off".
This means, of course, the complete replacement of all the cabinets including
boxes (part mounted on the walls) doors & drawers and countertops.
You can change the layout of cabinets with an unlimited selection of styles, colors and feature combinations.
DISADVANTAGES OF REPLACING:
You may not get your expected quality. Better grade cabinets are priced high.
Your kitchen may not be unusable for a considerable time.
These terms are sometimes used in-place of "refinishing," as these processes have similarities to refinishing. The difference is that all of existing finish / color may not be removed as in refinishing. Rather, finish color / damage is repaired, or color toning improvements are made and final new clear-coats applied. The cabinets can look like new. "Recoating" is the application of a new topcoat over the existing finish.
The term "resurfacing" is a vague, wider description, and may be used for ANY type of surface improvement.
Great cost savings over refacing or replacing cabinets. And you can have corrections made for any problems, add new hardware. Looks Grrreat. Costs less.
DISADVANTAGES: Basic kitchen configuration and layout remains.
Touch-up refers to matching the color and sheen of a small area of defect to the surrounding surface.
A low cost improvement which may solve minor appearance issues.
Very limited in scope of improvement and may not be "perfect"
